BSO Suicide: A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy took his own life in South Miami-Dade, BSO says

A Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy who works at the Broward County courthouse took his own life Tuesday morning on a Homestead street, law enforcement sources told the Miami Herald. BSO didn’t name the deputy, but said, he “has been employed at the Broward Sheriff’s Office for 16 years and was off duty at the time of his death.”

He died by suicide Tuesday morning while “under investigation by a local law enforcement agency,” officials said. According to BSO, the deputy, who worked in Oakland Park, had been under investigation for an “off-duty related incident.” Officials didn’t publicly identify the deputy or specify the nature of the incident Tuesday.

Earlier report:

Local 10 went by Schlapik’s home, where there were several people gathered, but no one came to the door to comment. The law enforcement source told Local 10 News that the deputy’s brother arrived at the scene at the same time as deputies Tuesday morning. BSO says Schlapik was off duty when he took his life and released the following statement: “This is a difficult day for our agency as we try to help each other through the sudden loss of one of our deputies. Our immediate concern is for his family and co-workers, ensuring they have the resources and support they need to process this tragedy.”

Authorities said the case is under investigation.
