According to Mexican authorities on Tuesday, Jorge Guillen, 43, was electrocuted at a resort hot tub while vacationing in Puerto Peñasco with his wife, Lizette Zambrano, 35. Jorge died and Lizeth  was injured as a result of “a possible electric discharge when both were inside the jacuzzi” in their private residence at Puerto Peasco, Sonora, according to a translated Facebook statement from the General Prosecutor’s Office of Justice of the State of Sonora (FGJES). The resort is about 200 miles from Mexico’s northwest border with Arizona Citing FGJES, TMZ identified the pair as married couple Jorge Guillen and Lizzette Zambrano from Texas.

What happened to Jorge Guillen?

The incident happened at a complex of private condominiums at the resort city of Puerto Peñasco, in the Mexican state of Sonora. The death of the man and the injuries suffered by the woman were “due to a possible electric discharge when both were inside the jacuzzi”, according to a social media post from the general prosecutor’s office of justice for the state of Sonora on Wednesday. State officials said they were working to identify the cause of the shock. Video taken of the incident shows onlookers screaming in panic as they crowd around the jacuzzi, which is located near a beach. Someone is shown doing chest compressions on a person lying on the ground in the video. The general prosecutor’s office of justice, known as La Fiscalía General de Justicia del Estado de Sonora (FGJES) in Mexico, is actively investigating the incident.

Western Tech will hold a moment of silence during Friday’s graduation ceremony after one of its students died in a jacuzzi incident while vacationing in Mexico. Per the Sonora State Attorney General’s news release, Lizzette was taken to a US hospital in critical condition, according to NBC affiliate KTSM. The General Prosecutor’s Office said she suffered burns consistent with electric shock. The accident took place just after 8pm local time on Tuesday at Sonoran Sea Resort, KTSM reports.

The General Prosecutor’s Office also reportedly said a witness who spoke to Telemundo said bystanders made frantic attempts to pull the couple out of the water but were stymied by the electrical current. One woman was even shocked herself as she tried to enter the hot tub. Videos posted on social media show the chaotic aftermath of the tragedy, with witnesses screaming as they tried to help the couple.
