Michael R. Lovell Death: Marquette University is mourning the passing of its president, Michael R. Lovell. Michael has died following a three-year battle with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. Michael was in Rome with members of the Society of Jesus and the Board of Trustees on a Jesuit formation pilgrimage when he fell ill and was taken to a hospital in Rome.

Who was Michael R. Lovell?

Michael R. Lovell was an American engineer and academic administrator, last serving as president of Marquette University. Lovell assumed office on July 1, 2014. Michael received his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He was the 8th chancellor for the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, having been named to that position by the UW System Board of Regents in April 2011.

Michael R. Lovell: Career and Awards?

Michael was the 8th chancellor for the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. He had previously been the Professor and Associate Dean for Research of the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. He has published more than 100 articles in engineering journals, has written a dozen book chapters, and recently co-authored a book, Tribology for Scientists and Engineers. As a researcher, Lovell has been a lead or co-lead investigator for nearly $30 million in externally funded research grants from foundations, businesses, and government agencies, including the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Education. His research has led to several technological breakthroughs, and he currently holds seven patents and 14 provisional patents. In 2013, Lovell was formally inducted into the National Academy of Inventors.

Dear members of the Marquette community: It is with deep sadness that we write to share the difficult news that Marquette University President Michael R. Lovell passed away today following a three-year battle with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

Support and resources are available for the campus community through Campus Ministry, the Faber Center, the Counseling Center and the Employee Assistance Program, which is available 24/7. A campus prayer vigil is being planned and funeral arrangements will be shared in Marquette Today when they are available. The days ahead will be full of heartbreak.
