Carlisle United have paid tribute to former midfielder Willie Carlin who sadly passed away on Monday, June 10. Carlin’s passing was announced by Derby County, with the Blues going on to pay their own tribute to their former player.
Who was Willie Carlin?
William Carlin was an English professional footballer who played as a midfielder. During his career, he made over 400 appearances in the Football League, scoring 74 times. He began his career with his hometown club Liverpool, making one appearance for the club in 1959, before joining Halifax Town in 1962.He joined Carlisle United in 1964 and went on to make over 100 appearances in all competitions for the club, helping them win the Third Division in 1965.
Willie Carlin Career
During his career, Carlin would also play for Liverpool, Sheffield United, Leicester City, and Cardiff amongst others. After learning of their former midfielder’s passing, Carlin represented Carlisle United between 1964 and 1967 and during this period made 93 appearances and scored 21 goals for the club under the stewardship of Alan Ashman. Following his spell at Brunton Park, the tenacious midfielder would link up with legendary manager Brian Clough at Derby County and played a pivotal role in the Rams’ second-division title-winning side in 1968/69.

Carlisle United paid their own tribute. In a social media post, they said: “Everyone at Brunton Park is saddened by the passing of Willie Carlin, who scored 21 goals in his 93 appearances for us between 1964-67.
